At Ross Medical Supply Co. Inc., oxygen cylinders are filled according to Food and Drug Administration Standards. Employees responsible for filling cylinders are certified according to standards that are also established by the Food and Drug Administration.

Oxygen cylinders are filled from a bulk supply of liquid oxygen. The liquid oxygen is analyzed by the supplier and certified in writing to be 99.9% pure. This documentation is kept on file at Ross Medical Supply.

Multiple oxygen cylinders (a rack) are filled at one time. As required, one cylinder in each rack is tested and must be 99.9% (0.3+/-) pure. Each cylinder is identified with a lot number, which identifies when and in what sequence the tanks was filled. Specific documentation is kept on file regarding which bulk supply of oxygen was used for filling. In addition to the lot number, the tank is identified according to content, the name of the supplier filling the tanks, and information as required by the Food and Drug Administration.

Because of the specific valves used in oxygen cylinders, it is not possible to fill these cylinders with gas other than oxygen.

The oxygen filling system, policies and procedures are subject to unannounced inspections by the Food and Drug Administration.
